Extraction of lignin from lignocellulosic biomasses using deep eutectic solvents, by Isabelle ZIEGLER-DEVIN (LERMAB) and Jean-Charles Moise (LRGP)

This project is being carried out jointly by LERMAB and MaTReC (Materials Technology Research Group – Universiti Sains Malaysia – Malaysia). It falls within the scope of the biorefinery and focuses on the valorization of lignin. Lignin is one of the three biopolymers making up lignocellulosic biomass, and its mass proportion can vary from 15 to 40% depending on the species. To date, this biopolymer has been very poorly valorized, even though it can be a source of high value-added aromatic derivatives. Lignocellulosic biomass residues are estimated at over 2,1011 t.yr-1 worldwide, providing a vast source of lignin.
