Abstract
Media consisting of a large number of distinct solid particles, grains, are widespread in agricultural (such as seeds) and industrial (such as aggregates) activities, but also in nature (such as sand dunes) or on a much larger scale, in the rings of the giant planets of the solar system for example. These materials are grouped together under a generic name because their large-scale behaviors are more related to the division into multiple elements than to the shape or composition of these elements.
