On the occasion of the graduation ceremony of the 2020 PhDs, which will take place on Friday, January 22, 2021 exceptionally online, discover the research work and projects of Giuseppe Sdanghi, who is one of the 8 PhDs winners of the University of Lorraine’s thesis awards.
Giuseppe Sdanghi defended his thesis on June 11, 2019 under the supervision of Vanessa FIERRO and Gaël MARANZANA on the following subject : Development of a hybrid hydrogen compressor: electrochemical low pressure / high pressure adsorption
What was your thesis topic?
Giuseppe Sdanghi: My thesis work focused on the development of a hybrid, non-mechanical hydrogen compressor. This was a real challenge because, to date, compression remains one of the limits to the development of hydrogen as an energy carrier. We therefore coupled an electrochemical system and a thermally driven system based on the adsorption/desorption of hydrogen in activated carbons to compress hydrogen up to 700 bar. It should be noted that this technology is quite innovative, and that there was therefore no reference in the scientific literature on this subject. Due to the lack of work on the subject, I had to rely exclusively on the results obtained with the numerical models I developed myself, and on a mix of technical skills improved over time to produce the compressor prototype from scratch. To achieve this, I worked in two laboratories, one specialized in materials science (IJL), the other in energetics (LEMTA), and it is by making the link between the two that I was able to achieve these successes.
