You are currently viewing Conference: “Light on lasers”

Jean-François Hergott, Director of Research at CEA Paris-Saclay gives a lecture. This conference is organized by Sciences et Société in partnership with the LEMTA (Laboratory of Energetics and Theoretical and Applied Mechanics) for its 50 years.
Abstract: We use lasers almost every day. The laser is 60 years old. Its fundamental principle was discovered by Albert Einstein in 1917, but it took more than four decades before the first laboratory laser was built in 1960. Since then, the use of lasers has grown, whether it is for cutting materials, treating illnesses, analyzing the composition of certain substances, etc. The field of its applications has become very wide. What is light? What are the particularities of lasers? What are its uses? This conference will try to explain what the “laser effect” is as well as the usefulness of this tool in research by presenting the lasers on which we work for the exploration of two extremes.
