Forests are at the heart of many societal and environmental issues that raise a variety of research questions. In order to present the scientific advances of projects supported on this theme, and to encourage exchanges between researchers, public authorities, businesses and actors in society, the ANR is organising a colloquium on 30 and 31 March 2021. Given the uncertainties of holding such an event in person, the conference will be held online only, with a slightly modified program.
Before the conference, discover the ANR’s thematic notebook n°11: “Tree, wood, forest, companies”, which presents an analysis of ANR projects funded on these themes between 2010 and 2018, and the objectives and major results of the projects in the form of dedicated sheets.
Covering 31% of the land surface, forests are subject to geographically contrasting dynamics with a predominance of deforestation and degradation in intertropical zones and a trend towards the extension of biomass surfaces and densities in temperate and boreal zones. Forestry research, whether it concerns climate issues, biodiversity questions, genome analysis or the social and economic valorisation of the goods and services produced by forests, is thus crucial to respond to current challenges.

The ANR regularly supports a diversity of research projects on forests, at various levels of technological maturity, involving multidisciplinary teams (biology, ecology, SHS, chemistry, etc.). In particular, the Agency is involved in the ERA-NETs SumForest “Sustainable forests for future societies” and Forestvalue “Innovative forest-based bioeconomy” to support French researchers. Between 2010 and 2018, 131 research projects have been supported by the ANR (excluding PIA and bioenergy projects).
